Hundreds of Northwestern Mutual Employees Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. With Day On, Not Day Off

MILWAUKEE, Jan. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Nearly 450 Northwestern Mutual employees will spend Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a day on, rather than a day off, by volunteering more than 1,600 hours of time in service to others and the community. The annual day of service responds to one of Dr. King's most persistent questions, "What are you doing for others?" and connects hundreds of volunteers with local opportunities to beautify and improve schools, feed and clothe those in need and mentor young people.

"Dr. King challenged each and every one of us to do our part toward creating a better world by seeking peace, justice, love and equality through service to one another," said Raymone Jackson, director of diversity and inclusion at Northwestern Mutual. "By spending our day off as a day on, Northwestern Mutual employees are helping to manifest a better today and a brighter tomorrow for our community."

The Northwestern Mutual employee volunteers, organized by the company's African-American Employee Resource Group and the Northwestern Mutual Foundation, will be volunteering at more than a dozen sites throughout Greater Milwaukee including schools, shelters, food pantries, child-care facilities and community centers. Activities include preparing and serving hot meals, beautifying local schools, mural painting, organizing and cleaning, and mentoring and tutoring children and teens.

"Northwestern Mutual has been proud to call Milwaukee our home for nearly 160 years, and we have a long history of giving back to the community," said Jackson. "Our employees play an important role in this, and we believe one of the best ways we can give back is by giving our time, expertise and passion to bring Dr. King's message to life in a way that leads toward meaningful change."

Each day, Northwestern Mutual helps families build financial security. Together with community partners, Northwestern Mutual is improving education, enhancing cultural attractions, revitalizing neighborhoods and accelerating cures for childhood cancer.
