Northwestern Mutual's Internship Program Ranks in Top 10 in U.S. for record 21st straight year
Internship Ranked #1 in Financial Services Industry

MILWAUKEE, Oct. 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Northwestern Mutual today announced that the company's nationally-recognized financial representative internship program was named by Vault.com the #1 internship for students seeking careers in the financial services industry.

Northwestern Mutual ranks #4 overall across all industries on the Vault's Top 50 Internships for 2017, and is the only company to be recognized in the top 10 for 21 straight years.  Additionally, the company ranks #2 for career development opportunities and #10 in the U.S. in terms of positive office culture, flexibility and work-life balance.

"A Northwestern Mutual internship is a unique opportunity for students to build relationships and receive hands-on training and mentoring from some of the best financial planning professionals in the industry, all coinciding with classroom work," said Michael Van Grinsven, Northwestern Mutual internship program director.

The company has embraced that philosophy throughout the existence of the program, which marks its 50th anniversary in 2017. Over that time, more than 52,000 college students have participated in the program, and according to Van Grinsven, 98% of interns say they found the program was instrumental or very helpful to their future careers – whether in the financial services industry, sales or other business endeavor.

"We're extremely proud of our long track record of providing college students with the tools and resources they need to achieve success after graduation," said Van Grinsven.

Northwestern Mutual expects one-third of interns that are seniors will pursue full-time careers with the company after graduation. Many of the company's most successful financial representatives and more than half of those leading its offices around the country are former interns.

Vault.com provides in-depth intelligence on what it's like to work in an industry, company or profession. Vault's editors surveyed thousands of current and former interns and evaluated hundreds of internship programs to select the programs they feel provide the best all-around experience. Many factors are considered, including mentorship availability, career advancement opportunities, intern involvement/capacity for learning, compensation, and industry clout and work culture.
