A Day On, Not a Day Off: Northwestern Mutual Employees Honor Martin Luther King Jr. Through Day of Service
More than 375 volunteers to give 1,500 hours to improve quality of life throughout Greater Milwaukee
Northwestern Mutual

MILWAUKEE, January 16, 2015 – More than 375 Northwestern Mutual employees will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by volunteering 1,500 hours to feed those in need, improve local schools, and mentor young people through a day of community service across the greater Milwaukee area. Milwaukee Public Schools’ Washington High School, Gwen T. Jackson School and Ralph H. Metcalfe School are among the locations being served.

“Dr. King said that ‘Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” said Raymone Jackson, director of diversity and inclusion at Northwestern Mutual. “So to honor his message, our employees will give their time, expertise, passion, and above all, labor, to help the people in our community who need it the most.”

The volunteer effort is organized by the company’s African American Employee Resource Group and the Northwestern Mutual Foundation. Employees and their families will be volunteering at 25 sites including Milwaukee-area shelters, food pantries, public schools, and child-care facilities. Volunteers will find themselves painting, sorting food, serving hot meals, and mentoring young people.

“Northwestern Mutual employees play an active role in the communities where they live and work,” said Jackson. “We challenge ourselves to see the holiday as a day ‘on’ rather than a day ‘off,’ and we have added more volunteers, which ultimately strengthens the community.”

Each day Northwestern Mutual helps families build financial security. The company has a long history of giving to the community and has been proud to call the city its hometown for almost all 157 years. Together, with community partners, Northwestern Mutual is improving education, enhancing cultural attractions, revitalizing neighborhoods and accelerating cures for childhood cancer.
