Northwestern Mutual Commits $250,000 to American Red Cross for Disaster Relief Efforts

MILWAUKEE, Sept. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Northwestern Mutual, through its Foundation, today announced a $250,000 grant to the American Red Cross in support of disaster relief efforts across the country. With the help of its volunteer base, the Red Cross responds to and provides assistance for more than 65,000 disasters every year.

The grant from the Foundation will provide critical funds for Disaster Responder Program support. These funds help to support Red Cross disaster response, including providing shelter, food and other supplies, training for volunteers, transportation and storage of equipment, health and emotional support, and reconnecting individuals separated during disasters.

"In times of emergency and disaster, people need comfort, support and hope. For so many who have found themselves in an unimaginable situation, the American Red Cross offers the help and immediate resources they need," said Jo Eisenhart, senior vice president, human resources, facilities and strategic philanthropy at Northwestern Mutual. "We're grateful for the opportunity to partner with the Red Cross and have a role in providing relief for those in need in throughout the country where disaster strikes."

From small house fires to multi-state natural disasters, the American Red Cross goes wherever they're needed, giving people clean water, safe shelter and hot meals when needed most. Recently, the Red Cross opened three shelters in California in the aftermath of the Erskine fire, distributed nearly 500 relief items and served more than 1,600 meals and snacks to those affected. The organization also launched a massive relief operation to combat flooding in Louisiana, likely the worst natural disaster in the United States since 2012 Superstorm Sandy.

"The continued support from partners such as Northwestern Mutual allows us to provide critical assistance to victims of these tragedies," said Patty Flowers, CEO, American Red Cross of Wisconsin. "We greatly appreciate Northwestern Mutual's commitment through not only the grant for $250,000 but also the company's employees' volunteer efforts."

Northwestern Mutual has partnered with the American Red Cross since 1987, donating more than $4.3 million during that time.
