MILWAUKEE, Nov. 30, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Northwestern Mutual, through its Foundation, is announcing today the launch of two college scholarship programs for childhood cancer survivors and siblings of those impacted by childhood cancer in the United States.
The new programs will aid the many survivors and families who struggle with lasting financial challenges related to treatment. The Childhood Cancer Survivor Scholarship will provide 25 scholarships for childhood cancer survivors and 10 for the siblings of those affected, respectively. This program will be administered through Scholarship America.
"Childhood cancer's impact affects both survivors and family members who struggle and sacrifice throughout and beyond the treatment journey. The financial challenges resulting from that journey shouldn't prevent these children from pursuing their dream of a quality college education," said Eric Christophersen, president of the Northwestern Mutual Foundation. "Northwestern Mutual is proud to be able to offer childhood cancer survivors and siblings the opportunity to advance their education, follow their dreams and continue to inspire others."
Both programs will target high school seniors, high school graduates or current postsecondary undergraduates, providing $5,000 to applicants who demonstrate strong academic performance, financial need, leadership in school activities and career and educational goals. All applicants will be required to provide a personal impact statement demonstrating how childhood cancer affected their lives and their willingness to overcome all odds along the journey.
The application process for survivorship scholarships will begin on Friday, December 1, 2017, and will be accepted until January 30, 2018, with selection results expected in April 2018. The sibling scholarship process will open on February 15, 2018 until March 30, 2018, with recipients notified by June 2018.
