MILWAUKEE, April 5, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Northwestern Mutual announced today the company earned a perfect score of 100 for the fifth consecutive year in the 2019 Corporate Equality Index (CEI) survey—a national benchmarking survey administered by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation—which reports on corporate policies and practices related to LGBT workplace equality. "Achieving this honor for a fifth consecutive year is an acknowledgment to our people, who work hard every day to make our clients, communities, and each other feel welcome at Northwestern Mutual," said Amy Hanneman, vice president of diversity and inclusion, Northwestern Mutual. Northwestern Mutual's perfect score earns the company the designation of a Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality. This year's report rated over 1,000 businesses, evaluating LGBTQ-related policies and practices including workplace protections, spousal and partner benefits, transgender-inclusive health care benefits, competency training, resources and accountability measures and public engagement with the LGBT community.

  • 572 businesses, including 193 Fortune 500 companies, earned a 100 percent rating and the designation of being a "Best Place to Work for LGBTQ Equality"
  • 85 percent of the Fortune 500 companies have gender identity protections
  • 97 percent of the CEI businesses offer explicit gender identity non-discrimination protections (up from 5 percent in 2002)
  • 93 percent of the Fortune 500 include "sexual orientation" in their nondiscrimination policies
  • 62 percent of the Fortune 500 and over 84 percent of the CEI businesses offer transgender-inclusive health care coverage (up from 0 in 2002)
